How do tuxedo studs work?

Studs replace the buttons on a formal shirt front. From the inside of the placket, push the toggle post through both buttonholes, then turn the toggle flat so it locks behind the fabric. The decorative face sits on the front. Four studs close the shirt, and cufflinks handle the cuffs.

They should look like a set. Matching finish matters more than matching shape, so keep the metals consistent, gold with gold, silver with silver. Our sets come matched out of the box, which settles the question.

Can I wear tuxedo studs with a regular dress shirt?

Only if the shirt has stud holes. Formal shirts carry small reinforced holes on both sides of the placket. A standard dress shirt has its buttons sewn on, so a stud has nowhere to go. If you like the look, a proper tuxedo shirt is the starting point.
